I really enjoy the thought of wordless picture books. I understand where teachers are coming from though when they say that students can’t “read” wordless books, because they are no words how do you read it?!? But I love the idea of having to become the author as the reader. I can hear the story in my head as I look at the pictures. This is such a great idea for students. They can become the authors and create a story to go along with the pictures after reading the story.
I also like the idea of having students write stories and then to paste the story on different pages to allow the students to illustrate is a great idea. Many students don’t realize how well they can write until they do an activity like this. They then realize that they can be authors and illustrators and create their own books.
Well said. I think wordless picture books would be a great motivater for students of all ages and a great way to get all members of the class involved. I think sometimes we, as teachers, talk too much and do give the students the opportunity to think things out on their own. This would be a great way to allow them the chance to tell the story in their own way.
Wordless picture books are a great resource to use in the classroom to teach writing! Giving students a starting point for writing stories can make the task less scary. I love that students can use wordless picture books to tell the story in their point of view and not be told it’s wrong or that changes need to be made. Hopefully you can use this in your classroom with your group of low readers. Thank you for everything you provided in class and I wish you luck!!!
